The Carolingian Renaissance
The carolingian renaissance was intended to give the clerical monarchy a small breeding ground for administrors and politicians. The truly radical transformation happened some two or 300 years later, around the turn of the millennium. New farming techniques were invented, and europe's population virtually exploded - doubling or trampling in size. This period also saw crucial legal developments and dramatic duels between the church and secular authorities respectively.
