Thanksgiving was promoted in the 19th century by New England abolitionist. Pumpkin pie became a popular dish during civil war era celebrations of Thanksgiving because pumpkins were grown on small farms, not plantations. A poem from 1842 promoting abolitionism and Thanksgiving is called Hooray for pumpkin pie.
