In the oakland, san francisco area, the display of individual worth was put on parade in two interwoven rituals. Both millionaires and winos were built on the values absorbed in those cruising car rituals. Drop outs and future rock stars went through the same initiations. The forbi, the once forbidden rock and roll, was played as background of virtually every activity. Virtually everyone who wound up contributing to the hate ashbury experience was touched directly or indirectly by the car and motorcycle culture.
