i became an executive and i started casting about for methods of organizing. The big popular method at the time, in the 19 nineties, was stephen covey's seven habits of highly effective people. And so i followed that process for many years, and found that even though i had this wonderful process, it often defeated me. This sort of fetishing of organizational system continued as i moved out of the music business and into writing. I eventually went to get my masters at columbia journalism school, and i ended up coming out of there with a book contract to write a huge business history of hippop from 19 68 to two thousand eight.
