Why is personal identity the topic on the syllabus for philosophy students? John Locke put this great emphasis on memory. That's what makes us the same person at the continuity of memory. If you are defined in terms of your memories, then of course you couldn't be around anymore and we would have to recognize a distinction between you and an animal.
