Each piece of middleware can inspect the request. If it knows how to handle it, it can just generate a response and that's it done. Alternatively, it could add some headers or change the request somehow. So the response passes back down through this pipeline. You get an opportunity to say, yay or nay and then move on to the next thing in the pipeline.
