The Growth of Paris in the Middle Ages
The Romans effectively left the city declined. What changed to kickstart the growth of Paris those centuries later? The Franks, a Germanic tribe which had invaded much of Gaul and in particularly that north-east corner down to Paris. And I think it could claim from the 12th and 13th century to be the intellectual hub, the intellectual center of Western Europe.
