The Role of CAR T-Cells in Cancer Immunotherapy
Cars are basically a hacked version of the T-cell receptor. They recognize in a genetically unrestricted manner all of the cancer cells that express CD19 but also the normal B-cells. One of the reasons this has worked well in B-cell malignancies is if you sacrifice all your B-cells, it's going to recognize something on every leukemia cell or lymphoma. But we haven't figured out yet how to do that for solid tumors.
