The History of the Quarry Bank Mill

Samuel Greg set up his quarry bank mill on the river Bolin, just south of Manchester in 1784. He married into a wealthy Unitarian family that made their fortune in the slave trade. With his wife's family's finances, he effectively had a line of credit for the remainder of his career. It allowed him to invest in more spindles, build four more mills, and employ more than 2,000 workers.
