The History of Fish and Chips

Fish and chips first appeared in the 1860s. By 1910, there were over 25,000 fish and chipshops around Britain. The practice of frying fish in batter was introduced to the UK in the 16th century by Jewish immigrants from Spain and Portugal. When food was rationed in Britain during World War II, fish and chips were considered too important to restrict. Fish and chips have been voted the nation's favorite comfort food.
