Sputnik inspired the US to pour a huge amount of money and energy into the space race, culminating with them landing on the moon first. The show flourishes for much longer than it did in our universe. It's sort of like making the point that progress is sometimes best achieved in competition. But there's also kind of a fundamental twist about the show, including sort of a twist on its title: "For all mankind"
