Is There Something About Insulin That Makes It Sufferable?
Insulin is what's called a biologic drug, which means that it's made out of living material and sort of like small molecules. The FDA has different rules for generic block biologic drugs than there are for more conventional generic drugs. A new company would have to go through a lot of work to prove their product is interchangeable with the original. And if you don't have this interchangeable label, your health insurance might not cover it.
