But it's also important to say, as Jonathan was suggesting, that this, the fact that nature is out there and is a kind of a retreat may also depend on a particular historical moment. And that seems to me, it's always at moments like that, that saying a genre like pastoral becomes important. The epic poem is a product of the transition from hunter-gatherer to agricultural way of life.
