Karen: In Horace, of course, that other world is the place to which you retreat from where you really are. But it's also important to say, as Jonathan was suggesting, that this, the fact that nature is out there and is a kind of a retreat may also depend on a particular historical moment. And that seems to me, it's always at moments like that, that saying a genre like pastoral becomes important. The epic poem is a product of the transition from hunter-gatherer to agricultural way of life.
