CHAPTER

The History of Barrage Balloons

Barrage balloons were first developed during World War I as a way to protect cities, ports, factories, and other sites from aerial attack. In the UK, the Royal Air Force Balloon Command was formed on November 1, 1938, and it was made up of volunteers from the Auxiliary Air Force. Women made the balloons, and they were trained on balloon handling and managing the winches that were used to position and anchor them. The balloons themselves were very large, 64 feet or 19 meters long by 34 feet or of 10.4 meters in diameter. But they did not have any kind of self-propulsion.
