Are We Going to See Thousands of Block Chains Down the Line?

I expect we're going to see thousands of big block chains down the line in the years. I know crypto currency is only one use of block chains, but today, i assume i can exchange crypto currency fom one type to another. Is that not a form of introperability, or are we talking about something more pervasive, or more deep than that? Now i think we'rei in a pretty exciding space in the block chaine system where we actually started to see interesting applications being built.
