Anyone can go on substact dot com, and you can be sending out your first email to your list of subscribers within 20 minutes. You are building up a group of people who like to listen to what you have to say. So there is nothing to prevent you from going and setting something up and trying it. When you get to some sort of critical mass, could be a couple of thousand, then that's a time to think about turning on paid if you feel that you have good open rates.
