The Role of Class and Gender in Social Identity

Social identities are informed by culturally defined groups and can be ascribed, adopted, or constructed. They can also be associated with social advantage and social disadvantage as they often define membership in in groups and out groups. US cultural norms conflate with race and class such that material wealth is associated with being white and both are uncritically accepted as indicators of success. This fosters a sense of white racial entitlement. Well, there's a leap and unearned privilege as well as negative racialized biases and stereotypes about people of color and those from low income backgrounds.
