German challenger bank N26 was an investor darling, backed by Peter Thiel, Tencent, and Li Ka-Shing. The company, founded in 2014, was one of the original banking disruptors but ran into a major hurdle when German regulator BaFin put a cap on how many new customers it could take due to concerns around money laundering controls.
