How Long Does It Take to Solve Hard Problems?

Sometimes as engineers, we forget that we were hired to solve hard problems. And it's like very natural to just say, hey, boss, here's a problem, you should solve it. Most of them, I think if they were easy, they would have been solved already. The bigger the company, the longer it takes to reach a point where you can reliably identify and propose solutions.
