The Ottoman Empire and the Muslims
Orthodox elites, especially churchmen, saw the Ottomans as the lesser evil. They also came to see the Ottoman Empire as a protector and bulwark against radical secular ideas radiating from the West. The two parties coexisted in an uneasy and unequal alliance because each one saw the arrangement as preferable to being overrun by their true enemies.
