The first right step is so important. Even a first-time buyer really needs to think like an investor because it's probably one of the biggest purchases you make in your life. I was mainly interested in stocks originally but my wife Heather got me into real estate and we've owned properties for more than 25 years. The average stock holding period would be about five months or something these days when I do my tax returns every year. We had 16, 17 houses that were sold between 2011 and 2012; they're now valued at over $1 billion each. They will go on sale next month with prices starting from around AUS$500,000 per property.
