Shopify has been working on a specific problem I mean many problems of course you said you've worked at four or five different things at Shopify but a specific problem was deconstructing a monolith the monolith. So typically monoliths struggle from the fact that to your point they're a big ball of mud there's no boundaries between things and on the extreme opposite end of the spectrum we have microservices where there are clearly defined subdomains and clearly defined boundaries  and communication happens across an API.
