fortress conservation and the militarization of conservation are two different but very closely related issues. To better explain this, I asked both Ashoka and Samuel to define fortress conservation in their own words and its history in Central Africa. The idea really is that to protect landscapes, you had to kind of cordon them off from industrial interests like loggers or miners who might have traditionally used those areas for either hunting or fishing.
