"The hard problem of consciousness is this big scary mystery. It's the problem that we mentioned at the start of this conversation," he says. "How is it that consciousness happens at all? What is it about matter arranged in a particular way that makes experience happen?" He adds: "Even though we haven't started out to solve this big question, we've actually got a very good naturalistic explanation."
