A lot of people think of the ovaries as egg baskets, which is sort of what the word means. But researches are starting to think of ovaries as more than just egg keepers. Each egg is surrounded by this halo of little bubbles that are cells that are called granulosis cells. Theyare the ones that are producing hormones, communicating with the egg and affecting the entire body.
There's an old story scientists tell about human ovaries: that they are ticking clocks that only lose eggs, never gain them. Now that story might be changing, opening the door to new treatments for infertility and menopause.
