The History of Capitalism
Before the United States existed as a country, it was a colonial project of the British Empire. The question of where the company began and where the Dutch Empire, or British Empire, ended was a very difficult question to answer. There was not a neat division between the state and the companies, because they were chartered companies backed by the crown.
