The Influence of Nature on Physicists

Herbert spencer comes to mind because this period of 18 seventies, 18 eighties is so critical for what we might call present day science. He was someone who was widely published on scientific topics and the idea that he might not have the right to speak about physics was quite foreign to him. So it's a moment where you really see the increasing specialization of science. You see that you can't really be a generalist any more in the way that spencer thought of himself as being a generalist.
