The Decline of Civilization in the Ancient Mediterranean
Augustine of Rome was a Roman Christian steeped in the Old Testament. He bought into the notion that civilization in the ancient Mediterranean was declining hastily toward an appointment with Judgment Day. Augustine expresses indignation that Rome's gods never seem to be regulated by or to issue any sort of moral code for personal conduct.
