CHAPTER

The Cornerstone Lane Ceremony at Washington D.C.

In Masonic tradition, Masons would open a lodge of sorrow symbolically inside Washington's home before the service. But since Martha was ill in bed it's not known if they skipped this part of the process. The casket was marched from Washington's Mount Vernon mansion towards a hill several hundred feet away. There were around 75 to 100 bystanders comprised of family, friends, fellow Masonic brothers and military figures at Mount Vernon. They were there to watch Washington's funeral and casket get entombed with an already built tomb built into the side of a very small hill.
