Is Mark Watney a Literary Character?
I consider my biggest weakness as a writer to be character depth and complexity. Everybody loves Mark Watney but nobody would call him a literary character, right? All you know about him after reading the entire book is that he's smart, kind of sarcastic and didn't want to die. And then believe it or not, jazz beshara in Artemis is also just me. She was like theoretically smart yet consistently made bad life decisions. It turns out the idealized me is much more likable than the real me.
