The Fear of Deep Neural Networks and Machine Learning

Dr. Hinton has worried that deep neural networks and similar machine learning techniques could be put to use in harmful, aggressive ways. Stanford researchers recently published a paper titled Are Emergent Abilities of Large Language Models a Mirage? So an emergent ability refers to a system developing some sort of skill or function for which it was not formally trained or programmed to do. But if they had chosen a different metric, the illusion of emergent behavior would fade.
