The Benefits of Diversity in Cherry Trees in Japan

Over 90% of the cherry trees planted in Japan are clones. The Sume Yoshino strain is hard to prune from what I understand. And so they are left vulnerable to an infection called witches broom that can harm trees. So a Sakura expert named Hideaki Tanaka out in Ibaraki Prefecture, who's growing a thousand sample trees of 400 different varieties.
