As an iOS user you're locked into Apple so there's not really that much to think about. A lot of Android device manufacturers will stop releasing new versions of Android for their devices after just a couple of years. You need to look at how well is this company supporting their older devices. The different microprocessors that are being used by the different manufacturers or even within the same manufacturer sometimes can vary quite a bit.
