Plato's Platonic thinking had a profound effect on early christianity. Augustine insisted the bible must be understood as having multiple layers of meaninga much of which are metaphorical or allegorical, and that you cannot understand the bible simply crudely literally. And this set the tone then for how mediaeval thinkers for a thousand years afterwards would approach reading the bible in general.
