The Link Between Innovation and Political Liberalization in China

The first flight of the long gestating C919 commercial aircraft finally occurred a week or so ago. The engines are still made by US and European manufacturers, the Chinese, I think have struggled on that front. And efforts to develop the most advanced semiconductors has yet to really bear fruit. So what do you see as the link, if any, between the need for greater innovation and the need for political liberalization at the same time?
