Derek Bell is perhaps the most significant founder of what we now call critical race theory. He saw racism as permanent and unmovable that black people would never gain full equality. People have looked to claim more fiercely to their own identities, he says. That kind of shift has come about almost unnoticed but it's been a big part in the rise of identitarian politics.
