How to Use the Gerund in English

Portuguese priests and merchants brought tea from East Asia to Europe in the 16th century. Most British people need to have a cup of tea as soon as they wake up in the morning. After the verb need, we always use this infinitive form of the verb to have. There isn't actually a rule for if we use the gerund or the infinitive after them.
