Freud's Cartesian Doubt
The self is the locus of that certainty and on which we can build everything else. I've always really liked the way that recur formulates this that Freud takes, taking the problem of Cartesian doubt and carrying it to the heart of the Cartesian stronghold. The idea that our sense perceptions could on some level be fundamentally warped would be the work of a demon. It literally is the demi-erogical thing.
