The Evolution of Uric Acid

Humans had a mutation in uric acid that allowed them to store more fat than other species. They mutated it so they got a bigger uric acid response, then when they got fructose they made a huge amount of fat for the same amount of fruit. When liver cells human liver cells had that gene, they made fat and response to fructose they did. And then we took mice and mice are fairly resistant to sugar, but when we knocked out that enzyme or inhibited it to make it kind of like a human then suddenly they were very sensitive to sugar. It's fascinating.
