Bowie's big problem was when he started anticipating what his audience might want, that's when it went wrong. He had such huge success with Let's Dance, which was meant to be a record that was popular. But then he started anticipating people rather than just going with his gut. And so for four or five years he made some pretty mediocre records. They're not terrible records, but compared to that very high benchmark that he'd given himself, they weren't good.
