The Precarious Position of King Alfred

This chapter highlights the dire circumstances of King Alfred of Wessex as the Danes advance further into his kingdom, looting administrative centers and weakening his ability to call upon his men for service. It explores the reluctance of the elder men and the growing mutiny among conscripted peasants, as well as the fateful Battle of Wilton where the outnumbered Wessexans held their shield wall and successfully pursued the retreating Danes.
