The Orestia is a trilogy of three plays by Eschylus that were produced in 458 BCE. The traditional notion of moral behavior was help your friends and harm your enemies. And the corollary to that is vengeance equals justice, but those stories are already beginning to suggest that vengeance doesn't really solve anything. In order to avenge his father's death, Orestes has to kill his own mother. This is a key transition from tribalism to civil society.
