The Forest Is for the King, Right?
In the mediaeval west, open lands like fields or meadows were understood to be commons. People had the right to use those commons to garden and raise animals. The forest is for the king, because the forests are where you hunt. And even simply living or going into the forest was understood to be a kind of outlawryand treason.
