The Problem With Vertical Scaling
The cloud vendors are very clever in how they throttle the network usage by the instance type to which you buy. You just can't add, you know, unlimited memory or CPU to a single box. Everything running on a single box with vertical scaling gives you no addition reliability or availability because if any component of that one box dies, you're getting stuff.
