You have to teach the concept, but then you want to push that intellectual understanding down into your intuition. The hacks for doing this is by using your visual processing power - images and visualizations. For many people, the visual system is much more effective at some things than other parts of the brain. If you can find a way to visualize the thing you want to remember, it often just makes your memory much more accurate.
