The use of the mirror as a metaphor in mediaeval european literature. The employment of the mirror in metaphorical contexts is so frequent and deliberate that it can be said to constitute the central image for a particular world view. By the fifteenth century, venetian glass makers had pushed the technology to the point that the general public could get their hands on these small, mass produced and ultimately inexpensive mirrors.
