At 18 he was interested in engines and learning a lot about them but he couldn't read so he couldn't learn about them from print sources. He only learned about them from dealing with his own engine apparently even basic arithmetic was beyond him because he was as I say very uneducated. At age 19 he decided that he wanted to have an education an elementary education of course because he'd never gone to any kind of school.
