The Role of Symbolism in the New Deal

New deal government did not have propaganda directed from a central ministry. Propaganda diffused through multiple departments, responding to direction from roosevelt. An american propaganda relied on co operation, which it got from the press and sometimes helped along by pressure rather than direct coercion. The role of symbols was extremely important. Schivelbush contrasts the successful use of symbolism with the insistence upon strict rationality by their social democratic opponents.
