CHAPTER

The Future of Property Rights

I don't think we should be absolutists on anything, and certainly not absolutist on property rights. John Deere as a system that makes it impossible for anybody to repair the tractors. If we enforce too much the property right or John Deere, we are making it impossible for the benefit of technology to trickle down into the rest of the world. So is there a balance we need to find between technocratic and democratic decision making rather than having it be an either or? Or is there a risk that this goes too far? Absolutely. I think it's a balance in one of my earlier books with Jim Robinson, Why Nations Fail.
