The History of Steam Engines
The Tenures Abolition Act of 1660 freed up the market for land. The first steam engine was built by Thomas Newcomen in 1712. He then set up a marketing company across Britain. By 1733, when the patent ran out, they had 110 Newcomen steam engines in use across the country. France only had 48 in 1816, 85 years later.
